Botanicals: Additional Species

Botanicals from Burroughs et al. 1988 (insecticidal), Rees et al. 1993, Dale 1996 (insecticidal), Golob et al. 1999, Okonkwo 2001 and a search of Web of Science for citations to papers on botanicals active against stored product insects (insecticidal and/or sublethal behavioral) with plant names in their titles added 317 plant species and 29 plant families to the list of 484 species and 95 families of botanicals included under “Effects of Botanicals on Stored Product Insects” on this website. Golob et al. (1999) has most of the same plant species as Dale (1996), adds a few and includes two species new to this website. In two cases, plant species are divided between alternative family names, i.e., Fabaceae and Leguminosae, and Apiaceae and Umbelliferae. Although Lamiaceae and Labiatae are valid alternative family names, all plants in these families are listed under the currently preferred family name Lamiaceae. Also, Amaryllidaceae has been considered a subfamily of Liliaceae. The additional plant species added Euphorbiaceae and Leguminosae to the list of families with more than 10 species.
