Rearing Stored-Products Insects

Howe (1991) and Fundamentals of Stored-Product Entomology book describe the precautions necessary to rear healthy insects. At one time, the USDA Laboratory at Savannah, Georgia reared 26 species of stored-product insects (Miller et al 1969 Rearing Manual), Danish Pest Infestation Laboratory reared 21 species and the laboratory at Slough, UK was rearing 101 species (Anonymous 1971). The following list gives 161 papers describing rearing methods. There are more than 2000 records in the Atlas and SPIRes books on the suitability of different commodities for insect development and reproduction. Also, see the Suitability of Foods page on this website for additional records.

Mediouni and Dhouibi. (2007) investigated the influence of laboratory rearing on field performance of irradiated carob moth Ectomyelois ceratoniae. Badran et al. (2022), Ghaemmaghami et al. (2020), Momenian (2022) and Pratissoli et al. (2004) investigated changes in parasitoid populations with continuous laboratory rearing.

These results suggest that up to a certain number of generations (G10), the quality of H. hebetor on Ephestia kuehniella significantly increased without adding field-collected parasitoids or changing the factitious host. To maintain the quality of the colony beyond this point, it should be rejuvenated by periodically adding field-collected individuals.

Quality control of the parasitoid wasp Trichogramma brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) over 45 generations of rearing on Sitotroga cerealella. Insect Sci. 28(1): 180-190. Female adult longevity was significantly different among sequential generations, ranging from 5.58 ± 2.5 d (at G5) to 3.75 ± 1.42 d (at G45). Although female wasps survived longer until the 15th generation, they allocated more days for egg laying at G5 and G10. Laboratory mass rearing colonies declined in quality after 15 generations and we suggest that they should be rejuvenated regularly by adding field collected parasitoids periodically.

Fecundity and fertility of adults reared on the artificial diet was significantly lower than single-pair reared moths. Irradiated males responded equally well to the virgin females as untreated male. Significant differences between dispersal of irradiated versus untreated males were obtained for distances exceeding 100 metres from the release point.

Momenian, Ghadir. 2022. Effect of continuous rearing generations on some biological parameters of Habrobracon hebetor (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) under insectarium conditions. Arthropods 11(1), 1. G5 had the highest quality compared to other generations on Ephestia kuehniella. Eighth generation (G8) had the longest preadult stages longevity and the percentage of sex ratio with averages of 12.14 days and 66.48 (female/female + male), respectively. The longest oviposition period and highest female longevity with the averages of 18.88 and 21.88 days, respectively, was observed in the ninth generation (G9). The highest percentage of larval and pupal mortality was observed in the G1 with averages of 1.20 and 10.83%, respectively. The results also showed that the highest number of eggs laid (fecundity), pupal hatching, daily parasitism, and paralysis of larvae with averages of 14.24 eggs per female, 99.56%, 3.98 larvae, and 59.8 larvae, respectively, belonged to the fifth generation (G5). Finally, the results showed that mass rearing in continuous generations affected the biological parameters of H. hebetor and the fifth generation (G5) had the highest quality compared to other generations.

Biocontrol Science and Technology 14, 313‒319. Parasitization of Ephestia kuehniella by Trichogramma pretiosum varied from 10 to 76% with lower values for the first four generations. From the 17th generation, the variability in the parasitism rate was lower. Adult longevity of T. pretiosum varied from 5.3 to 15.9 days and showed reduced longevity with increasing number of generations. Sex ratio of the offspring was not affected by timing of parasitism.
