Weaver and Subramanyam (2000) listed 200 plant species that were active against stored-product insect pests from the Prakash and Rao (1997) review of botanicals studied for use against agricultural pests. The effect of each of these plant species on stored-product insects is given here and an additional 284 plant species active against stored-product insect species are listed. These plant species belong to 96 families and most frequently to Asteraceae (100) and Lamiaceae (39). Another 10 families had 10 or more plant species (Annonaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Fabaceae, Meliaceae, Myrtaceae, Poaceae, Rutaceae, Solanaceae, Umbelliferae and Zingiberaceae). For 43 of the families, only one of the plant species active against stored-product insects is in the list. In three cases, plant species are divided between alternative family names, i.e., Fabaceae and Leguminosae, Apiaceae and Umbelliferae, and Capparaceae and Capparidaceae. Although Lamiaceae and Labiatae are valid alternative family names, all plants in these families are listed under the currently preferred family name Lamiaceae. Also, Amaryllidaceae has been considered a subfamily of Liliaceae.
A total of 37 stored-product insect species were used in these studies and four insect species were most common (54.0%) (Callosobruchus chinensis, Callosobruchus maculatus, Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum). These and an additional four species (Acanthoscelides obtectus, Rhyzopertha dominica, Sitophilus zeamais and Sitotroga cerealella) were used in the majority (77.2%) of studies.
A total of 16 effects of botanicals on stored-products insects are used in the tabulation. However, the effect was either sublethal behavioral (attract or repel, or deter feeding or oviposition) or insecticidal reducing the number of insects infesting a commodity. The effect of botanicals on stored-product insects is sorted by plant family. The same plant species may have several effects on an insect species.
A total of 269 chemicals from plants that are active against stored-product insects are sorted plant species from which they were extracted. These chemicals are active against one or more of 14 stored-product insect species as antifeedants, attractants, fumigants, insecticides or repellents, or inhibit insect development or population growth. Many other chemicals from plants that are active against insects have been identified, but have not been tried against stored-product insects.
Concentrations of active chemicals often vary between plant parts (leaf, seed, root, fruit, bark, etc.) and the effectiveness may vary with method of application (powder, extract or vapors). Botanicals generally need to be applied more frequently than residual insecticides. Original paper or the Prakash and Rao (1997) review will need to be consulted for this information. Original papers can be located by consulting the index in the Prakash and Rao (1997) review, or for other or more recent studies by searching the references cited here. Plant species not included in a paper title are listed in parentheses after the citation. Citations to most of the original references on antifeedants can be found in Koul (2005) or Nawrot and Harmatha (2013) and on many of the insecticidal chemicals from plants in Dev and Koul (1997). Out of 1224 active chemicals (900 antifeedant and 324 insecticidal) reported in Dev and Koul (1997) and Koul (2005), 10.5% (7.8% of antifeedant and 18.2% of insecticidal) were reported to have been tested against stored product insects.
Lale (1995) discusses the research needed to successfully use botanicals in pest management programs for stored-product insects. Active chemicals need to be identified, their mode of action needs to be determined, standardized extraction methods need to be developed and more field research is needed on application methods and frequency of application. Also, these plant products need to be made commercially available to farmers and grain merchants in a usable form. Insects 11(8), 532 reviewed 2031 papers (very few (1%) of stored product insects papers cited on this website) published between 1945 and 2019 on effects of botanicals on insects. As with stored product insects, many of the botanicals studied were from the plant families Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Myrtaceae, Rutaceae and Fabaceae. The remainder were from 185 other plant families. However, with stored product insects, fewer botanicals from the family Meliaceae have been studied and more from the plant families Asteraceae, Lamiaceae and Leguminosae.
