Hermetic storage on insects

Hermetic storage has been investigated to reduce fungal growth in wet grain and reduce insect growth in dry grain (Hyde 1954). More papers have been published on the effects of hermetic storage of commodities on their nutritional, germination, and other end-use qualities, fungal growth and aflatoxin content than have been published on the effects of hermetic storage on insects. The following chronological list has citations for 92 papers on the effects of hermetic storage on 23 insect species infesting 18 commodities. Only 12 of these were published prior to 1960. Between 1961 and 2010, 3-6 papers per decade were published. From 2011 to 2015, 20 papers were published. From 2016 to 2020, 25 were published, 7 in 2021, and 1 in 2022. Prior to 2000 most papers referred to air-tight or underground storage while more recent papers refer to hermetic storage. Few of papers on underground storage have insect in the title. Vayssiere 1948 and Cotton 1961 reviewed some of the early history of air-tight storage. Navarro and Navarro 2014 review more recent hermetic storage. Navarro et al. 1998 reported a top load, bottom discharge hermetic granary for small-scale farmers and showed that oxygen concentration increased 1.8% with each weekly 100 kg of maize discharge. During 6 weeks of unloadmg, the initial populations of Tribolium castaneum and Rhyzopertha dominica were successfully controlled. Baributsa and Ignacio 2020 reviewed the development and current status of use of hermetic bag storage. Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags are now being marketed in more than 35 countries. Dovlo et al. 1976 and Hodges 2014 recommend extension bulletin on hermetic storage of cowpeas (Ahmadu Bello University 1972).
